Youth Volleyball Rules

GENERAL

  1. Only players, coaches, and officials are allowed on the court during a match.
  2. Parents are responsible for their children to ensure they do not run free through the facility. Please make sure your children are with you during the games.
  3. SPORTSMANSHIP: All players, coaches and spectators are expected to treat others respectably. Any person displaying poor sportsmanship will be asked to leave the gymnasium. Dependent upon the severity of the infraction, an individual may be suspended from subsequent games and possibly the remainder of the season. Unsportsmanlike conduct includes behaviors such as use of foul language, fighting, and dissension toward the referee.
  4. FOOD AND DRINKS FROM OUTSIDE THE FACILITY ARE STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. Concession stand items have been approved by management, but must be cleaned up if spilled in order to protect the newly refinished gymnasium floor.

GAME

  1. Teams are encouraged to be present 15 minutes prior to game time for coin toss and warm-up.
  2. All teams need five players present to start the game. There will be a 5-minute grace period. If the game starts with one team having only five players, the other team will have the option of playing with 5 or 6.
  3. Matches will be rally scoring to 25, (cap at 27) two best of three with a third set rally to 15 points if needed (no cap).
  4. Each team has four points at game start.
  5. Each team may take two 30-second timeouts per set.
  6. An interval of 2 minutes is allowed between sets.
  7. All players must be allowed the opportunity to play.
  8. Substitutions are allowed only during a dead ball, change of possessions, time out or after an injury.
  9. Every attempt will be made by the official to explain any call that is questioned by the coach. This does not apply to judgment calls, which is the case with most calls.
  10. At game end, coaches and players will shake hands at mid court.
  11. A ball hitting a wall or backboard will be considered out. A ball that hits the ceiling must remain on the same side to remain in play.
  12. Final decisions on calls will be left to the discretion of the official.

SERVING

  1. All players must have equal opportunity to serve.
  2. A server may only be substituted due to injury.
  3. The 20-foot serve line will be utilized, with some exception. 3rd and 4th grade players will be allowed to serve over hand at the 10-foot line. Other players may serve from the 10-foot line at the official’s discretion.
  4. Taunting will be considered to be unsportsmanlike conduct.
  5. The server will have 10 seconds to serve after the referee whistles.
  6. Net serves are legal – if the ball hits the net and goes over, it is in play.
  7. In order to ensure skill development, a maximum of 5 points in a row will be allowed during a player’s serve. At that point, the ball will go to the other team. The intent of this rule is to prevent a strong server from completely dominating a game with the serve.
